4x4 grinding
[sm=WTFsgign.gif]My truck does great in four wheel high, but mybuddy got stuck in the snow and when it came time to use my four low, it grinded and popped out, and into neutral. I follwed the shift proceedure. I was stopped, had it in neutrual and pulled in a continous motion. After a couple of tries I got it to stay, and manage to pull my friend's Jeep out of the snow. 4 low runs good now. Was it just rusty from lack of use? Did I cause any permanent damage to my transfer case or other components when it grinded?
aslong as it just popped out without any serious grinding it should be fine. the transfercases are built pretty tough.
I always put mine in 4x4 once a week to keep every working good.

I had the same problem, truck sat for 8 months and the rear brake locked up. tried to force it into the garage using four low. Grinding and some other god awful noises accompained, Fixed the brake got it out of 4 low back in 2wd, drove it a while and now everythings seem to work fine.
Chances are that you need to change the fluid in you t-case. I have a 89 standard cab short bed 3.9 with 289,000 miles on the original motor and drivetrain. Of course, t-cases get neglected until the have a problem. Mine started making GOD AWFUL noises in reverse. What ended up happening was, The rear seal on the t-case leaked before I got the truck, and leaked most of the fluid out. the seal gets worn out easily because the driveshaft yoke is always spinning in it. drain your old fluid out (hopefully there is some in it!) and fill it back up. The book says the same as the tranny fluid. I used half tranny fluid, and half a bottle of lucas transmission aditive. I drove it for about 1,000 miles, then changed it again, replacing it with just tranny fluid. the old fluid was really nasty. The t-case needs to be full. The reason it popped out of 4-low, it because of the fluid. the actuators are just sticky. it you change the oil it's cheap and pretty easy....and can save you HUGE money on a t-case replacement.
goodluck!
