Default Head light\Dimmer switch malfunction

Hello, this if my first post. I have a 95 Dakota 3.9 RWD. I am havingproblems with the dashmountedhead light\Dimmer switch. When I pull the knobto the headlight on position, the headlights work but the tail lights and dash lights do not light up. I have found that when I pull the **** slowly the lights come on in between the two positions but turn off when it clicks into place. I tried replacing the switch with a new one from AutoZone but the problem persists. Does anyone know how to fix this or had a similar condition and found a solution? Any help would be much appreciated.

Is it popping the fuse when you pull it out? I found the problem with mine was the PO had removed the ground wire that grounded the switch housing.

It's not popping any fuses. The ground wire is intact on the switch. I even went out to the dealership today and purchased a new **** that inserts into the switch but that didn't change anything. It's very strange that the switch basically works fine in between the two click settings. If I'm careful I can even get lights to stay on if I pull it a little but as soon as I move anything it slips out again. I wonder how the internals of the switch unit works. It seems pulling the **** opens and closes a circuit interaly that switchs the lights on and off. It is a brand new switch so I doubt that it bad.

I tried shorting all the connections together on the harness with wire and the lights can turn on. At this point I'm thinking of wiring the lights to a toggle switch and use that for now.

Anything that I'm not considering here??

What did the problem end up being on your tailights and dash lights? I am having the same problem and cannot figure it out.

Thanks, Randy

I still haven't fixed the problem properly. I've Mickey Moused it for now. I used this diagram to figure things out. I crimped on several connectors and wired them up with a toggle switch. When I turn on the switch, the head lights, tale lights and dash lights all turn on. I'll tackle the problem in the spring. It has to be a short somewhere but for now it works and thats all I care about.

Default Replaced dimmer switch

Got the problem of no headlights unless dimmer switch is pulled back. Release switch and all headlights go off. Replaced switch with no effect. Any ideas? 96 Dakota

Isn't just to where you can pull the switch out and it stays? Atleast my 87 is that way

Default Dimmer Switch

96 dodge dakota. Could it be the headlight switch that is bad? I was driving night, dimmed headlights and when switch was released I had no headlights. Now they only work when dimmer switch is held in the up position. All other lights and directional signals work fine. I replaced the dimmer switch but the problem continues; what can I try next?
