The only way to tell is to look .
7.25 have stepped axle tube and 9 and 10 bolt covers
8.25 have straight axle tubes and all have a 10 bolt cover.

You can also tell by the style of the cover.
The 7.25"has a cover that is like a stop sign. The 8.25" has a cover that is oval.

Are those the only two different styles of rear ends on the dakotas? I know mine has a limited slip, is that the 8.25" rear end?

ya theres only the 7.25 and 8.25. the 9.25 didnt come out till the gen2.

the 7.25 mostly cane in 4 bangers and some V6's while the 8.25 came in V8's, 4x4, some V6's. and on 4x4's the front diff is a 7.25.

the best way to tell what it is by the cover as dodgerules said.
