Default 95 Dakota Transfer Case shifter Hard to move.

I am looking at buying a 95 Dakota 4x4 Ext Cab v8 and the transfer case shifter is hard to move and when I get it into 4 high finally it takes the smallest amount of pressure to push it forward and pop it out. It almost seems like it doesn't get into 4x4 high all the way. The shifter is harder than crap to move also. Four low is a lot worse as far as trying to get it to stay engaged. Is this a common problem? What do you think the problem is. Thank you very much for your help in advance.

I had the same thing happen to my transfer case. I tried using 4 high and it kept popping out and grinding. After a few tries I got it to stay. Mine was just stiff from lack of use, and it shifts to 4 high and low and will stay in both. Also make sure that you have the transmission in neutral when shifting.

it sounds like it's just stiff from lack of use. I would go underneath and lube everything up and then move the shifter back and forth quite a few times, and it should loosen stuff up.

I have the 91' Dakota 4X4 long bed LE with the V8 318 throttle body engine

I Have had a similar problem only mine is more difficult to put into 4 HIGH than 4 LOW. Some times it goes right in ........ sometimes it revolts! Maybe I am a bit moe lucky as I have never had it "pop" out of place when in use..

Also, I Have struggled with getting it back OUT of 4 HIGH oncethe need for it was over..

I think I will follow the suggestion of give the mechanisms a good lube ....any suggestions as to what to use to lube it all up ??????
Thanks ahead of time.
