Default 318 Magnum

1996 Dakota with 318 Magnum. Completly loses oil psi when temp gauge reaches 190*(normal from cold to 190). Engine seems to be OK. Any help?

This is a friends truck.I did not have all the info when posted. He replaced the original and this problem arose. Replaced oil pump - same problem. Purchased another engine from wrecked Dakota and installed with same results. I assume it is at idle speed. Correction from first post -it does lose oil psi and will start to rattle before he shuts it down. Heis a decent mechanic and knows when to shut it down, but this one has him stumped. Sorry for the confusion, butI am getting info 2nd hand. Thanks!

I would try a thicker oil in it. I use 15w40 in mine cause it used to do the same thing. when it was at idle the oil pressure guage would go to the bottom and the oil light would come on. now it doesnt go down too much. but your oil guage will always be moving around. aslong as it doesnt go too low, you'll be fine

hook up a manual gauge and see what the actual pressure is. If it is low at idle and the pump is good than the bearings are going, The pump does not create oil pressure. It simply causes oil flow! the resistance to that flow cause pressure. If bearings are worn than oil passes thru too eaisly and pressure can not be built . Pressure needs to be enough to pumpoil to the top of the engine!
