Default Huge transnission cooler install

I needed to upgrade the transmission cooler in the truck. I plan on towing cars occasionally. I also read that the OD is kind of weak in the 46RH trans (yes I know not to tow in OD) so if it's heat related hopefully a bigger trans cooler will help it live longer. I was in the junkyard and by chance came across a 2000+ Ford F-150. I've seen this in my customers trucks and thought that it's a pretty big cooler. So I grabbed it.

I was going to put it in front of the A/C condenser but I don't want anything inhibiting the performance of my A/C. With a black truck and 110* + I need all the cool I can get. It fit perfect.

You can see the one bracket that doesn't look like it belongs. That's for the trans cooler.

I was going to run rubber hose around the radiator but I'm afraid of it rubbing. It came with 3/8" flare nuts and steel line so I just ordered some 3/8" brake line and bent it to fit around the radiator. I think it came out awesome.

Drivers side:

Passenger side had to be more elaborate to make it around the radiator and then the overflow bottle.

Do you think that could potentially make the truck run hotter due to restricting some air flow to the radiator? I have an aftermarket trans cooler, but have yet to put it in...

Not at all. The radiator is huge to begin with. I have a 180* thermostat and an electric fan that I think moves more are than the mechanical fan. See my electric fan install for more info on the temperatures my truck runs at: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...n-install.html

Nice write up. Its always good to keep the transmission cooler, I think it is said for every 10 deg. cooler you save up to 10 more years on your transmission.

I replace my stock size one with a nice large one a few months ago.

Big, yes, but huge? I saw one on a ramchager in a junkyard, at first I thought it was the AC condenser. Now THAT is huge.....
The service manual for 95 IIRC says to remove the ac condenser to get at the aux. trans cooler, could not believe what I was reading.
I pulled the radiator and got at my leaky hoses that way....

Since you are not too proud to use Ford parts, check out the ranger and explorer rear sway bar axle mount brackets....
I have them on my truck, they are a lot cleaner looking than the big ubolts I got in the after market sway bar kit. One of them rides on the edge of the ford pumpkin, and you don't want that one. Get 2 of the other side mount, drivers side I think....

As far as personal vehicles go, I think it's huge. There may be larger out there but I haven't seen them. They are usually a 1/4 to 1/3 the size but usually not larger than 1/2 of the one I grabbed.

Who's not proud to use Ford parts? I wouldn't own a Ford but it doesn't mean if I find something useful I wouldn't use and tell people what and where it came from. I have a friend that won't use anything but Toyota parts. He wants rear disc brakes on his pick-up but refuses to look at other manufactures. Fine, go without.

I gots some 16x7 ford explorer sport trac wheels with 4.5" backspace on mine, and got accused of blasphemy for it...might not have been this forum, tho....
They fit fine, will have Pentastar center caps screwed on top of the ford center caps, just took a little machine work to enlarge the center holes a bit....
TulipCitywheels sells centercaps without the blue oval, just a black circle....

Ford trucks are usually a good source for tranny coolers, I have a few in my parts stash...
the one I saw on the ramcharger, by the time I saw that it was NOT the condenser, someone else was pulling it....don't know if it was factory or not..
