My '95 does the same. Went through some mud one time in 4H and all was fine then next thing I know, just my back wheels were spinning and I was stuck. Put it back in 4H and crawled myself out then it dropped back into 2H. It's annoying I'd like to know whats the deal with it too

Mine is doing the same thing, I am going to fix it this weekend. I believe I read somewhere about a detent issue. Mine will go into 4x4 and the light comes on, but the handle will pop back out easily. It will stay engaged by itself, but I imagine offroad or hitting a bump it will pop out of 4x4. When I bought the truck I was told 4x4 doesn't work, so I was delighted to find it just pops out of gear haha
