03 durango idle prob
For some reason my 03 has had this probelm since I bought it.. Sometimes when I come to a stop, the idle will surge and feels like the truck has a miss, and even stall sometimes. Feels like when you try to stop with a manual shift without out pushing in the clutch. I took it to the dealer many times since its still under warranty and they can never find anything. Also when it starts to do this, if you shift it into Neutral and back into drive most of the time the idle will smooth out and be fine. The warranty is close to being over on the drive train, and I bet they will find somthing wrong IF I take it in then. And sometimes when the truck is just idleing in park you can hear l;ike a miss in the exhaust, but no check engine light to indicate a misfire or anything.
We have an 03 Durango SXT with the 4.7 and have the exact same thing happen to us. We've done the tune-up, thinking that might help, but it hasn't. It happens infrequently, but it still happens. Anyone else have this problem or any ideas on what the problem is?
Know what you mean. I have tired tune up, tranmission service, scan for codes everthing and nothing. To me feel like the converter isn't coming out of lock up, and that why when you shift to "N" and back it clears up.
Check for low trans fluid, or a loose trans filter. This will cause air in the system and cause the torque convertor to lock which will act like a miss. I was having the same problems with my 2003 [4.7 liter], and this was the fix. I noticed the "miss" mainly on hard brakes or when the engine was cold. I checked the fluid - sure enough, it was low! For any newbies: remember to check the fluid when the engine is running idle, warm and on level ground [refer to the manual, if needed]. Good Luck!!

Already did a tranny service twice. This problem has been going on since about a month after I bought it. It not more of a miss but more like a shutter. Mine doesn't do it when braking, it does once stopped, and idling. Hopefully this will mess up before the 70K waraanty runs out.
The dreaded idle surge issue is either due to the TPS or IPS sensors than need replacing / cleaning or (as was my case) due to the PCM failing. Sticking the vehicle in neutral always resulted in an engine surge and cold start upalways involved a massive surge. Your PCM in the USA is covered under a warranty separate from the vehicle and you should be covered.

I agree Indy. Take it back!
Sounds like the torque converter isn't unlocking when stopping like it should. When you take your foot off the gas your torque converter becomes disengaged and you coast as a fuel saving feature. When you hit the gas the torque converter is supposed to speed up to match the engine and engage. (Re-Lock)
It also could be a torque management problem in the computer which can be fixed at the dealer.

Guys I have took this thing back about 10 times for his probelm. They say they can;t feel anyhting(like thats a bigsuprise)They didreflashed the ECM, but didn't change anything. And without any check engine light( or hard codes) they say they can't replace parts. I was just looking for anyone that had same problem so I can let them know where to look.
I even thold them it feels liek the converter is staying in lock up.. Cause sometime on accerleration, the truck feels slughish.(no torque mulitplication from being in lock up) the other times it will pull liek normal. And thatpisses me off to, my brothers 2000 durago is faster....LOL
As far as taking back being an "IF",, naw, its going back in before teh warrantyy runs out. The "IF" part is after the warranty is out, After that I know it's not going back, I will fix the damn thing myself.Pull tranny and put new converter in. Probelm is I know how it works atthe dealership, they don'y make as much for warranty work as they do as ifMr John Doe brings it in after warranty is over, Then they stick it to them.
