I bought a 98 dodge durango real cheep because it has something wrong with the rear end and it has roar when driving. im told its the ring gear/pinion gear those priced out are 750 from the dealer.. so im trying to find a used rear end.. but there all 750-850 as well so whats everyones thoughts? change the gears and bearings? or put a rear end off a junked durango. Its a 9 1/4 rear end with 3.92 gear ratio. with a hexagonal cover. Anyone have any ideas? is it a Pain to change the bearings and gears?

 

It's fixable. Easy does it at any transmission shop.

What did you pay for the D? I am looking for a second one right now. TIA.

im going to go with www.ringpinion.com to get the ring,pinion,bearing kit all for liek $340... But i paid $2800 for it. Its fully loaded sunroof and all. Body and interior in extremly good condition. Only problem was the gears and he told me about that befor i bought it. I think i made out ok.

 

Absolutely. I am actively looking for one in the $2500-$3000 range right now as my son's first vehicle. Since I know all about the Durango, I just need to find one priced right that isn't a repair nightmare. I too would have bought it as is for that amount. The rear end is fairly easy and inexpensive to repair/replace with lots of options in lockers and aftermarket stuffs available. Nice buy.
