Hey everybody. I'm new to this board.I have a question that I hope someone can assist me with. I just bought a 2000 Durango 5.9L RT w/around 90k mi. Great-looking vehicle and rides well, overall. However, when I start the vehicle, the oil pressuregage goes way up, still within "safe range." When I'm on the open highway and the RPM's are up there, the oil pressuregage stays pretty high. When I come to a stop light the oil pressure goes down. A couple of times, the pressure went completely down and the "check gages" light came on. It only stayed there for a second and popped right back up to about 40 again. What's causing this and how can it be remedied? I get some knocking and pinging in the engine at higher RPM's at times as well.

 

Sounds like a bad oil pump. Don't run it when it is down like that. Shut it off. Try to replace the sensor first just to make sure that it isn't the problem.

The gauge will move around, but always in the safe area, never a light or a code. If you have that, get it fixed ASAP.

Thanks guys...appreciate the feedback. Any ideas on a ballpark figure on how much it will cost to have a new oil pump put in?

 

If I remember correctly it is around $1000 but I could be wrong call around for quotes and if you are decent with a wrench it isn't hard just drain the oil out, drop the pan, and have at it.
