As far as doing it yourself, it is a long shot. A mechanics lein can only be obtained by a mechanic or shop which performed some type or repair or modification to a vehicle in which the owner would have to pay the shop $. There are also time restraints as well. For example, here in NC the car has to be 'abandoned' for 3 months, then a mechanics lein can be obtained.
