check engine lights come on for an emission related fault, not always on o2 sensor

cycle your key 3 times (do not start the truck) and read the codes displayed in the odo (P_ _ _ _) tell us what the code(s) are and we can better help you figure out whats up with the truck

Thanks for the tip, but had already taken in for service, apparently was something to do with hoses around the "evaporation canister????" Anyhow, 2 1/2 days and $500 later, I should be able to pick up tomorrow, arghhhhh. Know of any good mechanics/shops in South San Jose, CA area???

The hoses were worn out, andleaking. They also charged fora "smoke test"??? This was what the auto service place I took it too said....wasn't the dealer. Used to take my vehicles to dealer or service center specializing in my vehicle, but had heard about this place and thought I would give it a shot....looks like back to the dealer for me

a smoke test is like what it sounds, they test for leaks using a smoke machine to pump smoke into lines, hoses, etc almost anything

and they can pressurize it to more accuatly find leaks

The fix for this, should have been relatively fast, easy and inexpensive. Dealer would have been your best bet, since they have the "smoke test" equipment, on site. The part was most likely a length of vacuum hose, routed from the throttle body, to the canister. Also, there are several short lengths, under the battery, which route to other parts of the evap system. These become dried out, split and leak. Sometimes you can hear it, with the engine running and the hood up and sometimes, you can't. Usually the Check engine light, is the only alert. Hard to tell from performance of vehicle, other than lower gas mileage.
