i need some help!
my 98 D has a check engine light, the code says: output speed sensor malfunction.
my question is, wtf? the auto zone guys told me it has something to do with a wire running to either the tranny or transfer case, but i dont have a clue what to look for.
what happenedwas last night i was driving down the highway, got off and came to a stop. When i tried to take off again it felt like i had lost a gear, the car didnt want to move and i heard lots of loud clanking from what sounded like the tranny. i get to my friends house, look around and cant see any fluids or anything leaking, checked theoil and tranny fluid both were fine. i couldnt find anything hanging out of the block or tranny so i thought i would drive it to see if it did it again. i get in, start it, put it in gear, move about 5 feet and it died. thats when the SESlight came on. i let it cool down for about 30 minutes, got back in, drove it 20 miles back home and had no problems.
any help or information would be great, thanks in advance.

It's on the transmission. It is called the output sensor. It is located on the drivers side middle. This is where mine was and I have the 46-RE trans. I just don't see how it could do that kind of **** to your trans.
You maay want to see about dropping the pan on that tranny and see what kind of damage in there because that sounds purely mechanical and not electronic at all, my bet is something grenaded in there and you shouldn't be driving it at this point. The sesnor could be gunked up (according to one of my tranny mechanics I've been through) by metal shavings from said grenaded trannygiving you a false reading after it went. Again drop the pan and go from there.
