Default Valve cover gasket replacement
This will be the first time changing gaskets on the D. Is it a pain, or pretty standard? What do I need to inspect while the covers are off?

It is pretty straight-forward. Check the condition of the valves, and if you know how, check the clearences for good measure.

there is nothing really to check. you have hydrolic lifters that will bleed down over time making the rockers appear to be loose. resist the temptation to tighten them up...
