5.9 life Expectancy
My 2000 Durango SLT+ FT4x4 5.9L Magnum is driven everyday. 178,000+ miles so far. Same motor and trans as it had when she shipped out of the factory. Zero issues.
All synth fluids and serviced as it should be when it needs to be. Nothing is left to chance. I drive it live a race car when I want to, live a truck when the needs arise and as a daily driver all the time. Racer, truck, car... my D has taken care of me and I of it and all have been great. I'd buy 10 more of them in a row if I were to be guarenteed to get another one like mine each and every time.

Mine Is 2002 5.9 and it just tuenrd 65.000 i serviced it and it turns out that my battery had to be changed for 100$ Exide Battery
but the engine looks and starts as it was new
but how about the trannys???? how long they lasts??
now i'm afraid about the tranny! couse i hear alot that they are not good enough, and it was the durango main disadvantage.

Mine blew out at 135K. It was entirely my fault. I lost a Freeze plug while going down the road just after a freakish rain storm and sun was shining so I couldn't see the steam. The block drained entirely and #5 and #7 piston rings collapsed. While it was in the shop I had the whole thing rebuilt. Trany, T-case, and motor. So I can't speak on their life. I know now that I have a new machine build to my specifications and it just eats Chevy's and ****s Ford's.
Let me clarify why I posted this question. I was watching “Trucks†and they did an episode on Diesel vs. Gas engines. They stated that most truck gas engines fail at 200K because of worn piston rings however a diesel engines can last up to 400K. Well, by the end of the year I’ll be well over 200K just want to beginning to consider if I should be saving up for a new truck. The repairs coming up for me would be a considerable cost. Just wanted to see when proper maintenance is preformed if it could last until 250K or more. The most mileage that I have seen on an original 360 was 215K.
you should be able to get to 300k with it with proper maint... I put almost 100k on a 108k motor (198k total) before swapping it out because a bolt ended up in the intake and ultimately into the cylinder. at the time I was thinking like you, 200k and it should be pretty much done. after swapping the motor (318) to get it back up & running I yanked off the heads to look at the cylinders on the old motor. to my supprise, there was almost no lip on the cylinders and the cylinders still had a good crosshatch on them from the original build. I ran mobil 1 15w50 since I bought it and highly recommend it. I would have expected another 100k out of it based on what I saw and how it was running before the bolt incident.
In the end, it didnt matter much as I had a run in with a deer... we both lost. jeep gc totaled.

I'll toss my accedotale evidence on the pile... my 2000 Dodge Durrango 5.9 has about 180k on it, and still no problems (though I killed the tranny around 130k or there abouts...). Few minor repairs along the way, but the motor still going strong.
My Engine Blew pulling my boat at 96,000 miles. Replaced with a new engine from Dodge at a
cost of $5k. Don't know if it was the right decision. Now I hear every little noise, and wonder if it is going to let me down again. I am seriusly thinking about selling it.

Biggest threat to long term life of a 5.9 V8 is cracking of the cylinder heads in the ridge between the intake and exhaust valves which gradually will deepen into the coolant passages, particularly cylinders number 7 and 8 at the back of the engine.
2nd biggest threat is the stamped steel coolant pump impellor being eaten by caviation and letting it overheat. The stock Robertshaw/Siebe made thermostat is also bad to crack at the brass arms.
Third biggest threat is detonation caused by the plenum gasket leaking oil in cylidners 7 and 8 and ruining ring seal, or in the worse case busting a hole in the crown.
If those threats are held in check
my opinion is that 200,000+ miles should be expected.
