Default need help. 99 5.2L durango "surging"

Hello,

I hope someone can help me.

About a week ago I noticed that my durango was idling rough. Didn't think much of it, blamed it on the plugs.

the otehr day, driving it to town it started surging when I tried to accelerate. Its like it had no mroe power or something, but finally picked up speed (went from 50 to 65) and the trouble seemed over. Today, I drove to town and back, maybe some 50-60 miles and it surged on me 3 different times. It doesn't seem to care if the engine is warm or cold and it happened to me around 20-30mph and between 50-60 mph.

I am out of warranty, I have a 99 5.2L Durango SLT 4X4 with abt 105k miles on it.

my fluids are fine, no milky stuff in my oil or ATF, no metal flakes.

I am dumb when it comes to cars and I need help. Had one mechanic tell me its the fuel filter but the dealership said no filter.. its built into the pump and they will replace the whole tank...

Are they just lazy or is that more cost effective?

oh, also, did notice a metallic clanking noise when it is surging, Its not very loud and seems to come somewhere near my 4WD shifter (but obviously from under the vehicle).

Road conditions here are flat, its about 80 something degrees outside and I try not to drive like a maniac.

any help and advice is appreciated.
thanks

Try replacing your Throttle position sensor for your engine surge issues. Cost is around $36 bucks from NAPA auto parts and it is a very easy do it yourself. Sensor is located at the driver's side of the throttle body. Only 2 hex screws to remove and the sensor slides out.

Thanks for the suggestion, however I didn't get that far. The same night I posted the question, my check engine light came on...

anyways, long story short, it was my #3 cylinder. I changed plugs, wires distributor cap and rotor.

I think the cap and rotor were original ones. My rotor was like a good 1/8 inch shorter than the new one.

My wires seemed fine but u know what they say, might as well do all of it.

The guys and O'Reillys said to use NGK v power plugs, but they were out. Thay said it would improve gas mileage, power and torque.. but even better would the be NGK iridium plugs, but they are not made for the durangos...

But I am glad I got my surging fixed

When I got my plugs changed. The factory plugs uses Champion plugs. Champion makes a very high output Truck/SUV plugs so I replaced mine with those types of plugs. So far, everything runs great with those new Champions.
