I'm getting ready to do maintenance on my 2001 D 4.7 auto 4x4 68k. The owners manual said it need to have the transmission bands torqued. What is the difficulty level of this procedure? How much should I expect to pay a mechanic to do this? Also are there any filters that need to be replaced in the tranny? Any other pearls of wisdom on this issue? Thanks guys, great forum.

 

I just took mine in and got some tranny service done last week, as I am going on a 17 hour (each way!) trip tomorrow. I think the tranny mated up to the 4.7 doesn't have bands that need to be adjusted. The only thing I can say to you is that make sure to get the tranny pan dropped, filter changed, and don't get the system completely flushed. I also threw on a 18,000 lb. tranny cooler as well, since I do a lot of towing. Might be a thought for you to prolong the life of your tranny.

 

Take it to your reputable Dodge dealer. They charge around $120 give or take a few for a major scheduled transmission maintenance service. They will replace the fluids, filter and make adjustments to the bands and such.

 

Yeah I didn't notice last night but since you have the 4.7 you do not need to adjust any bands. The 5.2 and 5.9 transmissions do need to have the bands adjusted.

 

The best thing i founr to do to any truck is too disconect the tranny cooler from the radiator and add a large tranny cooler in frint of the radiator if you think about ti the radiator fluid gets hotter then tranny fluid so why get it hotter then it needs to be?

 

Findingconflicting info about the tranny bands. Do they require maintenance on the 4.7? I just want to make sure I know what I get charged for.

As Mean Green says, the 45RFE and the 545RFE which are mated to the 4.7 and 5.7 do not require band adjustments. $120.00 is about right for the dealer servicing. As is often repeated, a simple drain and refill with OEM ATF+4 fluid is the preferred method. Flushes are bad as they can dislodge gunk that can fubar yout tranny in short order.
