Default '99 Durango 5.9L Oil Consumption

Anyone had a problem with oil consumption going up in their 5.9L? I have a '99 Durango, about 129K miles now, and it has recently begun to use oil- about a quart evry 1200 miles or so. Never used a drop until the last couple of months; still runs fine, plenty of power, no noticeable smoke. I've heard of intake manifold gaskets causing trouble on these vintage engines- is that a possible source of my problem? Wondered what experience anyone else has had, or what they've heard on the subject.

It's using oil right? Not leaking oil? Maybe your rings are wearing out? 192k miles on your original engine is alot! maybe time for a internal checkup?

No, it's 129K. My '93 Caravan with 194K uses less oil than the Durango, and that's never had any internal work done on it. No evidence of any external leaks.

I had a 99 Ram with a 360 and had the exact same problem only around 35,000miles. Have the gaskets changed and your problems will go away. Fortunately, mine was under warrenty at the time.

I have a 99 Durango, we had to replace the manifold intake gasket because it was blown and sucking oil up into the engine. This was causing unusual oil consumption(no smoke or leaks visible) and poor gas mileage and some pinging when I tried to get it. Our mechanic found this by checking a vacuum hose??? Also heard you can look down into it and see if there is oil, not sure how to do that. If that is the problem I recommend getting the new and improved gasket, as the old ones are paper and the new one is metal. Good Luck.
