Default 10K tow rating?

I went camping this weekend and saw a 99 D, like Mine with the 360, pulling a 30' 7800# camper. I went to talk to him and he said he changed the gear ratios, front and back for $3,000 and now had a tow rating of 9900 pounds!

Anybody heard of anything like this? Do you think it is safe? Should I spend the money on gears or on an Excursion for a new camper that size?

What the engine can pull and what the chassis can pull are two different things. The lower gears will let you tow heavier things but I wouldn't push the D up to the 10k mark.

Excursions go pretty cheap cause no one wants to feed them thirsty beasts.

Nothing with a diesel goes cheap but the V10, even with 4x4, can be had for dirt. I almost bought one from my brother-in-law's girlfriend right before buying the D but just couldn't work out a deal with them.

if your willing to settle for a mid 90's CTD they can be found at a reasonable price... any 12v motor will last a long time.

That guy doesn’t know what he is talking about. Ya his D can pull 7800 lbs but the D's chassis is not built to handle that kind of weight. It takes a lot to stop, tow, and handle that kind of weight. The thing is if he wrecks or gets pulled over he will get fined. Besides there is a weight limit for a reason. That frame, well the entire chassis wont handle that weight.
