Hello everyone, starting to look for a durango soon and have a few questions. Thinking of getting a 2000-2002 model, V8, 4WD.

What are the main concerns that trouble the durangos? I've seen that ball joints and some electrical issues are some of them.

What is the normal gas milege with a 4WD 4.7 with about 80% highway/interstate driving? What are some of you out there getting? Any mods? (FWIW i picked up a tad under 5mpg by doing intake/full exhaust on my 95 Z28... hoping the durangos respond as well)

Is one model year particularly better than the other? ('00-'02)

I found an '01 4WD, 4.7, 80k miles going for $12,500... sound like a good deal?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks,
JB

RE: Durango questions from newbie
We have had our 2000 D since 11/2000. It has the 4.7 and part time 4WD. There are only 2 things that we do not like about it. First, it did not come with factory side steps and secondly, the gas mileage sucks. Otherwise, we love this almost problem free vehicle. At 44,000 the crank sensor went and not covered by warranty. Couple hundred there. I mostly used Regular Gas and always used Synthetic Oil. We have had no sludge build-up. I did install Edelbrock IAS shocks (worth their weight in gold) custom stainless steel split read dual exhaust with flowmaster muffler (looks and sounds great) an Ultima Red Battery, Gator Accessory belt, K&N Filter and new PIAA bulbs all around, what a difference. I also will install a fail safe 180 degree thermostat and may invest in an electric fan. Like I said, we love our D and hope that you take the plunge and buy yours.

Best of Luck!
