Eck,
Welcome to the forums. I've had some various models of 4x4's and my Durango is the latest one. As far as the clunking goes, Mine does it all the time, only when you put it in reverse. The dealer says this is normal for the Durangos. But on my R/T, my 4x4 is always engaged as it is a full time AWD. There are times also when driving, if I completely let off the gas to let the D start to coast, it will sometimes make the clunk as well. All this noise is the transfer case disengaging/engaging.
You only mention your D is a 4x4 but is it a part time or full time? If it is full time, don't worry about it, this clunking is normal. If it is a part time, it should not be making this noise unless your D is engaged in 4WD. So start from there, if your D is a part time, check to make sure your D is not engaged in 4WD mode, otherwise, this clunking noise when you put it in gear is normal.
