another thing you can do is if you can get an xacto (sp?) blade in there, start slicing the inside of the sleeve and the take a pick of some sort and push in on the side of the plastic from the outside (if possible). this will have the plastic cave in and then it should be easier to remove.

PITA = pain in the ankle
IIRC = if I remember corectly
^^What he said.

We used channel locks and twisted and pulled the sensor out.

BUT, Since you broke it off flush you will have to come up with another way to remove it. Either like steve05ram360 or like dhvaughan sugested and knock it put from inside.

OBTW ( oh by the way) changing that sensor may not fix your problem. Search here and you'll see plenty of threads about it. On my bro's D his speedo didnt work intil 30mph (I think). My wifes D has same problem as yours, abs and brake light on. I'm not really worried. We still have brakes but no ABS. Most likely it's module in engine compartment and I'm not paying what they want to replace it considering age and condition of our D.

not sure if this applies to a durango or not, but on the ram there are two speed sensors. the one in the differential is the ABS sensor, and there is one on the tailshaft of the trans/t-case called the speed sensor. there is an ongoing debate as to which fault is associated with each. neither is overly expensive, about $25 each. see the Standard Motor Products website for a nice application guide.

Dont be too worried about removing the diff cover. its easy. here's some info with pics.

Standard Motor Products. part numbers and pics.

edit.. i checked the smp site and they do list the same 2 sensors as the ram. as far as wifey's comments go where she is afraid you're going to break something....i like to try and work on things first - and if i just can't do it, or can't afford the tools, or can't get it back together, or break it and can't fix it. - then take it to somebody. you're usually no worse off - except for the extra towing bill [:@]

so the piece is 100% plastic that is stuck inside the diff? Just push it into the diffand drive, the gears will chew it up into unrecognizablly small pieces.

I went to the tool store and bought a set of those hook screwdrivers and the damn cap came right off. I was able to change the sensor in 10 minutes! We should add this hook tool to anyone changing that differential speed sensor. My speedometer is now workng! the abs and break light came back onafter about 5 minutes. So I still have the abs and break light problem but at least I now know that it isn't the rear abs speed sensor. I also do not have to take the Durango to the mechanic thieves. to summarize ; as we stand now, one variable has been eleminated. I have checked the output sensor at the bottom of the tranny and it seems a lot easier to change than the rear speed sensor, the only problem being that this probably has nothing to do with the abs and break light being on. Third variable is the break light switch which some people have mentioned as the culprit for these warning lights. I looked underneath the steering wheel dash by the brake pedal assembly and found the infamous brake pedal switch. I did notice the permanent labeling on the switch stating"do not replace."I don't know what I will do next. As my durango is a 2 wheel drive, I believe that it only has the rear abs speed sensor correct? I don't know if I have front speed sensors. If somebody can send me a picture of the front speed sensors I could at least check their current(ohmeter). before replacing because I believe these are the expensive ones. I want to thank everyone who responded to my posting...A lot of times people who post questions on these types of boards do it like me in times of desperation...and you people who respond bring such an uplifting of hope to which I will always be grateful. I will keep you posted.

Glad you got it out and replaced.

I remember reading on here I think. That the rear diff sensor does speedo up to 30mph then the sensor in tranny takes over. Like I mentioned previous post my brother rear diff sensor died and his speedo didnt work unil after 30mph.

I had tranny sensor died and it scared the crap out of me. I had crusie set @ 75mph and when it died the rpm and speed increase! I hit brakes and disengaged cruise control and saw check engine light was on. Course I live in Indiana and this happened 1/2 way back from N. Carolina. Took to shop friend of mine has and hooked up to scanner and it showed the tranny sensor didnt work. Replaced sensor and cleared fault and didnt have problem after that.

The ABS control module on our D under hood on drivers side box with wire plug and I beleive two relays mounted in front of it. I think it's like $400-$500 to replace that.

btw (which means "by the way") you cannot see the sensor from the inside of the diff just by removing the cover. I removed the cover, drained, and refilled mine today with Mobile 1 75w90.

Reset the computer by disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery and turning the key on and off a few times. If your ABS light comes on again then try the speed sensor on the tranny.

this is all great information. I will change the speed sensor in the trans next. I have also ordered a brake light switch from rockauto for like $8.00. I'm going to change the differential fluid also. One question, where is the fill plug on the differential. It seems like the plug on the case is kind of low, just want to make sure before i change it. I'm thinking about buying an aftermarket chrome cover, the durango is not driven much and I don't pull anything. Is it optional touse either a seal or a gasket? I've seen some people use a gasket and still use sometype of sealent around the cover.
