whining power steering
i have a 2000 durango slt 4wd with 100k miles. i had my power steering pump and rack & pinion replaced in feb. 2006. my new pump was whining from the start. my mechanic checked everything and said it was ok. it was loud when cold and less noticable when hot so i said i'd live with it. recently i had the power steering replaced under warranty because i found it was leaking fluid. both replacement pumps were new, not rebuilds. my mechanic got them both times from the dealer . this one now is whining too although not as loud as the first replacement.i just hate the noise. it was never noisy before being replaced.
my question for you is it ok like this or is something wrong with the pump or the rack or what. any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

it is a mechanical pump, and mechanical pumps will always make some level of noise, without hearing it in person it is hard to say if yours is making excessive noise, but if it were me and everything were working correctly and there were no leaks id leave it be.
I had a hell of a time recently with replacement power steering pumps. One made noise then quit after 40 miles and the other just didn't work at all. I'm just dealing with the slow leak in my original pump now, and it doesn't make any noise.
