If you really want the RWD, you can remove the front driveshaft and put your T case in 4High. That will give you the RWD.
However, if economy is your only goal, you will not see that. I know of at least two other D owners who removed the front shaft and did an MPG evaluation over several tanks of gas. The overal result was no difference in mpg. I can testify to a swap the other direction. I went from PT4x4 to AWD, and again the economy was the same.
If you think about it, all of the xtra weight of the 4x4 system is still present (sans the shaft), and aerodynamics and engine power are still the same.
If you live in a snow belt as I do in Ohio, the AWD is the cats meow. If you live down south or on the west coast, 4x4 or AWD may not be needed at all if you are not an off roader. ( I am not)
I do get a tad better mpg in my D with its 4.7 over the 5.9 crowd. That being said, its a plain fact that any of the current Durangos are thirsty beasts.
