Default 4 wheel drive problem

The 4 wheel drive shifter on my 2000 Durango just slides freely and the car makes a grinding noise whenI tried to drive it. This is my sons car and is not used that often when he is at school. My wife had driven it using 4 wheel drive a few days before this.

I have no clue.

HMD:

Could be as simple as a linkage issue, or as expensive as a new T case. If you are game,I would crawl under and scope things out. Have someone move the shifter while you look from down below to see what is (or isn't) going on.

Hopefully the linkage has come off or loose.

i had the same problem with my D... it turned out to be the "wear clips" on the shift forks were all wore away.. this allowed it to slid out of gear while i was driving and then when i was sitting there it would slide free in and out.. my sudgestion if pull the T case take it apart replace the clips and most likly the shift fork depending on how long its been like this.. its realy easy to do honestly but would cost a lot of you have a trans shop do it..
