Orange sludge in radiator hose & coolant leak. New water pump?
I have a 2003 Dodge Durango (4.7L) and I have replaced the radiator hose recently and now I have a coolant leak, cannot locate from where, and when I take off the pressure cap I have an orange sludge everywhere. Even my overflow bottle fluid is orange. When idleing, the power steering feels like it is going out and the battery gauge drops. But when I accelerate all is normal. I have been told that I need to replace the water pump. Is this accurate? If yes, how do I do that myself and where is it located? If not true, any suggestions? Thank you....
First thing thats most important is findind out where the leak is. Seeing that its loosing coolant it can be gunking up causing the "orange sludge". The power steering wouldnt be a concern at the moment seeing how if your not carefull the coolant loss can easily destroy your engine. About how many miles do you have going on the D? I would assume its up there, or if not maintenance may be lacking. Im not here to put you down or anything along the lines but if you do not know where the pump is i'd highly recomend having someone else diagnose the leak and repair. Removing the pump requires a bit of time, shroud/fan/lines etc etc. But if you do plan on doing it yourself i'd highly recomend getting a book. Also did this person who told that it needed a water pump visually inspect the issue? Did he notice a problem with the fan or bearings? Was there coolant on the belts causing them to slip?
With the engine off look around for leaks or sweet smells. Any signs of coolant, when dried up it leaves a yellowish/white powder. Key areas would be on the radiator connection w/cap, thermostat housing, heater lines water pump. etc. Being carefull with the engine running look at the fan see if it wobbles at all, then again being carefull have somone hit the throttle and standing by the side see if any leaks spring up under rpms. Try not to stand infront of the vehicle. (yeah im a safety freak)
