Did you get any kind of a warranty with it?? The heater core has been a common issue in the D's epsecially in the 98,99,00 models.
To make the repair, the entire dash must come out which is quite a job, and usually in the $700-1200 range if you have it done.
You can DIY for alot less, but this job is not for the faint of heart.
It is possible that one of the hoses are leaking where they attach to the core, and the coolant is running into the heater box where you are then smelling it.
Hopefully the folks you got it from will work with you on it.

I have a 2000 also - same thing. I haven't found any leaks (yet). I just live with it. 2000 Durango ain't worth throwing money into....everything breaks on these things. I'll drive it off a bridge eventually.

Wow, sorry to hear you are having such a time with your D. Would you care to expound on the issues you are/have dealt with??
My 01 has been 98% trouble free for most of its 68k. Noproblems to report other than aux coloant pump taking a puke which is a known issue. Other than that and less than stellar economy, I have no complaints.
