Clunk noise from front end
I'm new to this forum so first I want to say hello everyone! I was hoping one(or more) of you may be able to help me with an issue I'm having with my durango. Its a 2002 SLT 4.7L 4x4. I'm very particular with my vehicles and very sensitive to vibrations and noises. I'm experiencing a click noise on acceleration that seems to be coming from the left front suspension. I experience one click on accel(front suspension unloading), and one again when I'm braking(suspension loading). From time to time I will also hear a click / pop noise while steadily cruising(bump related). My first thought was ball joints, but it seems that the majority of people are hearing these noises only while turning. I put it up on a hoist, and applied some grease to the upper and lower ball joints, as well as the outer tie rod ends, and it seemed to help. The next day the noise returned. I live in Chicago(current temps well below freezing), and I thought that maybe it may be the shock absorbers reacting to the low temps. On Nissan vehicles we find a lot of shock absorbers and struts making pop / click / clunk noise when loading/unloading the suspension and also on bumps. I would like an outsiders opinion before I start throwing parts at it. Just to add: I'm a full time technician for a Nissan dealer and Master ASE certified. Please don't poke fun that I'm asking for help(or that I service Nissans) :P
Check out the hub and bearing assembly and see if there is any play. Could even be the stabilizer bar needs some adjustment. Also, check out the control arm bolts - I read in another post that one guys had come loose.
were your balljoints bolted on or rivited on? if riveted then you may want to replace them as there was a recall on some of them.
a clunk could easily be a sticky shock valve though, or any number of lose or worn bushings.
