Default 4x4 question, CAN ANYONE HELP ME

hi,
i am new to this forum, but the reason i am here is because i have a 2000 durango 4x4 slt. the other day i was driving down the road and all of a sudden i heard and clanking noice, like something was raddling loose, down where my shift is to go from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive. i immediately pulled over and listened and tried shifting from 2 wheel to 4 wheel high and low. it was very obvious something had broken there. there was no pressure on the handle to switch from the 2 to 4 wheel drive, and nothing happend when i shifted. i have completely lost my ability to go to 4x4. but it wont shift out of 2 wheel drive either. not even into neutral. now, the truck drives fine. i dont have any problems going from park to reverse or to drive. it is just my 4x4. does anyone know what might have happend? i am honestly thinking that the shift linkage might have just got disconnected some how. i am very machanicaly inclined so i know i can fix if i just knew what it was. thanks any info would be greatly appreciated. i will check this forum daily.

thanks,
Tradd

Sounds like you took out the fork or bearings.

I think you are looking at a full rebuild. [&o]

Tradd:

You should be able to get a good look at everything if you crawl under. Hopefully, it is a linkage issue or possibly a U joint that is on its way out.

Did the noise go away once you pulled over, then continued on??

If you have not serviced your T case lately, now is a good time to see what kind of fluid comes out.

BTW, the Tcase, tranny, and axles should be serviced every 30k.

With all the rattling around I doubt it is linkage but if you rip into it the problem will be obvious.

hey everyone.
thanks for the input. i hope it is not the fork orbearings, if that would cause a full rebuild. i dont even think the truck is worth that. i have not climbed under it at all and looked at anything. i just havent had the time and like i said it is driving fine just in 2 wheel drive. the noise went away before i even pulled over. it only lasted about 10 seconds. nothing fell out from underneath the truck i was sure to look back at the road. after the noise went away there have been no other indications that anything is wrong. just the fact that i have no ability to get out of 2 wheel drive. about the tranny. i bought the truck used and the dealership said they had just serviced all that. so i am at about 40,000 miles so i was getting ready to do it soon. i willl definately do it now.

thanks again for all the info and if anyone else or any of you have anymore info i would greatly appreciate it.

thanks,
Tradd

mine did the same thing last week. mine was the linkage. mine came apart where it hooks up to the transfercase and the linkage hits the front driveshat. thats what the clanking noise was from.
