N8ech<----Yea, there is no ABS sensors on the T-case, there is only a range sensor on the manuals cases that is. The 2 wheel ABS is in the transmission output sensor, and top of rear diff. In 4 wheel there are sensors on each front wheels, transmission output sensor, and top of rear diff.
As for installing different size tires on AWD, well I would NEVER do that. The front and back turn at the same time, you would just put excessive wear into the T-case.
azcrom<----The 242 does have a 2WD option. The AWD case is the 244. Also, comparing the 1998-2003 Durango's to 2004+ is like comparing a base ball to a wall, completely two different things wit completely two different parts. There is no 2WD option on the 244 AWD case, it's entirely a different case. And it's not electronic, the internal manual switch is put into position by and electronic motor. Adding electricity will not create new gearing.
I did not say the 242 was AWD; I said it has 2WD whereas 244 doesn't. And I already knew the 244 is AWD. Regardless, the wiki pages on New Venture, plus some other sites, seem to indicate that 242 is basically a 244 with a different coupler and no electronic shift motor. So my question was why doesn't the 244 have 2WD?
I still want to know if there is some electrical signal I can send to my 244 and have it shift into 2WD. Or...another thought....maybe I can just put a manual shifter on the NV244 out of an older 00-03 D and get the 2WD? Whatever.
This is what I was referring to. Anyway the answer is no.
On the main shaft there is a differential in the center of the case. One has a coupler to disengage the front axle and one does not. Yes they use a lot of the same parts yes, but there is some slight differences inside and out.
My nv244D casing cracked and and nothing worked. Could find a used one without the exaggerated pricing. SO I've chose to put in the nv233D all is lining up the transfer case goes on but the remaining 1/2 inch it won't go no further. Not sure what the issue there is. Help
Externally, both cases are the same.I cansay for a fact that either one is a bolt in swap.
The NV233 is a two speed part time 4x4 case that cannot be used on hard surfaces. The NV244 has a mini differential inside that allows full time 4x4/AWD operation on hard surfaces as well as a 4Hi and 4Lo setting.
I made the swap from part time to full time back in Feb. of 2007, and have had no issues.
The AWD is great because you don't slip and slide when its wet out, and the fuel penalty runs anywhere from none to 2mpg depding on your driving style.

Great threat Don, just an additional note, NV244 guts cannot be placed into a NV233 case because of the range selector differences; the NV244 Range selector will not travel through the ranges because the case buildups will stop the travel. The 233 case is built up to accept the Shaft Rail, whereas the 244 lower fork will not seat for the buildup.

I registered just to answer this
I have owned 2 98s and 1 2004 ...1 98 had the nv231 and the 2004 nv233 both are straight up 2w 2wpt n 2wlo ...1 of the 98s had nv232 with part time full time , 2w 4wpt 4wft n 4wlo
you had to shift from 2wd to part time 4wd first then shift to full time 4wd
the nv244 doesnt have a selection for 2wd at all nor is there a way for it to go into a 2wd mode as it is built internally to always be in awd mode which means the coupler is always engaged...you could say limited slip differential.....just like a rear end has a limited slip ...there are clutch packs inside that let it slip after enough resistance is met
none of the internals are interchangeable between the 3 models ...I do believe you can put the nv232 or nv231in one with a nv244 or nv233 which involves cutting a hole for the manual shift into a vehicle that has an nv 244 but not vice versa
you could put it in, but it's more trouble than it's worth...you can downgrade to manual shift, it is hard to upgrade to electronic shift but doable
