Default burnt diff oil

I had the rear bearings replaced at a dealership less than 2000 miles ago.I hadn't noticed anything on the short trips around town but the differential started jumping and clanking as I was turning into my neighborhood after a 2 hour trip on the interstate. I could actually smell it inside the truck once wewere in the neighborhood (25mph).I had the oil analyzed and the differential oil is completely burnt.

What would cause a diff to heat up so badly that it would burn the oil in less than 2000 miles?

Also, should I be concerned about the condition of the posi clutch packs being exposed to that much heat?

2002 Durango 2 wheel drive 3:42 posi and towing package.

Thank you,
Randy

Incorrect bearing replacement or installation would do that.

What rear bearings are we talking about????

Also did you install the Posi 3:42????

if you have a posi in the rear, a lack of friction modifier could cause the rearend to heat up.. its a 500ml bottle additive that is supposed to go in when the diff fluid is changed..

Randy:
Dealer's usually give you a 12/12 warranty on their service work. I would get back to them, and seek relief as it appears something was done incorrectly.

The factory options were 3.55 and 3.92. If it really is a 3.42, I wonder if it is a Dodge or other aftermarket gearset??

Sorry. I have not been able to reply to any posts. Hope this one makes it through.

It is a 3:92 factory rear end.

The dealership replaced EVERYTHING inside the rear end including the carrier under warranty because the tech (Not the same tech that replaced the bearings) said that the pinnionnut was torqued too tight.

Thank you all for your input.

Good business. Yes, this forum will not let you post more than a sentence or two for some time now.

Very, very frustrating.
