You can go with a smaller motor and higher gear ratio, but in the long run, the motor will have a shorter life span because of the consistent high revs it must be in to move your vehicle. With a bigger motor and lower gear ratio, you'll get longer life of the motor. Gas mileage between the two problaby would be the same. smaller motor needs to work almost twice as hard as the bigger motor so it must burn more fuel and oil.

You'll problably save more money in maintenance on the bigger motor setup vs smaller motor setup. Some of my 4x4 offroader buddies regretted using a smaller sized motor when they go offroading. There just isn't any power especially when climbing in some places. But if you're more into baja type offroading, smaller motor may do fine.

2000-up got rack and pinion, the older ones tend to wear out inner tie rods pretty quick.

The 45RFE is the only trns you can get with a 4.7...it is also the trans you want.

No synthetic ATF+4 that I am aware of, the OE fluid is a semi-synthetic already.
