Hello all I have a 1999 Durango 5.9l and 46RE trans
Fore the last few weeks it has been holding in 1st gear longer then normal to about 2500RPM under normal accel. As of yesterday after stopping for 45 min on my way home it is now stuck in 1st gear. I pulled over put it in park and tryed shifting manually no luck it accells fine no slippage.and rev is good too. I checked the fluid it is full (a little over , I've never added any) and doesn't smell or look burnt. It currently has 102,000 miles on it and had the trans. rebuilt at the time I bought it with 71,000 miles on it. Iplan on changing the filter anf fluid (ATF+4) I did take a trip last weekend and put about 800-900 miles on it (mostly Hwy). Any ideas on what to check ?

Is your check engine light on? It may be possible the actuators are messed up.

 

Yes the check eng light is on. But have no scanned it for codes yet, need to borrow a scan tool from a friend and find what code it has set.

My tranny was also stuck in 1st gear and got the check engine light. My D was under warranty back then and the dealer looked up the code and found out the governor actuators on my tranny was shot.
