Default 2001 5.9L RT Wont Start

I've got a 2001 5.9L RT Durango that I recently bought used with ~120,000 miles on it. Just two days ago, while driving, the engine cut out forcing me to pull off to the side of the road. Now I cannot start the engine no matter what I try. The battery is not dead and the engine is getting fuel.

Investigating this problem after getting it towed home I discovered rust in the distributor but I don't know if this is what would be causing the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Do a tune up. That is a good sign of a lack of maintenance/low quality parts...

TS:

Are you getting any check engine light???

Do the key on key off dance, and see if you get any codes on your odometer window.

Watch your tach when you try to start it. Does the needle move or bounce at all??

If not, could be a crank or cam sensor gone bad.

How do you know it is getting fuel?? Can you hear the pump energize when you first turn the key to run??

Also, try a battery disconnect reset and see if that helps. Do the key dance first though.

To start, you need fuel, compression, and spark. One of the three or more must not be there.

I had the exact same problem with my truck on Christmas Eve. I just replaced my coil and it started right up.

N8ech, I don't get any codes on my odometer window at all, and I can hear the fuel pump as well as smell raw gasoline when trying to start it up. Disconnecting the battery did nothing to help.

Anyways, I went out and got a little gizmo that is supposed to tell me all the error codes coming from the computer when I plug it into the truck and came back with no errors at all which is slightly infuriating since the truck wont start, there obviously has to be something wrong with it!

I read tarathatcher's post on her truck dying and it seems to be the same problem as mine experienced so tomorrow I am going to see if I can get the coil replaced, wish me luck!

Rust in the distributor? More likely corrosion due to contacts. I suggest replacing the cap and rotor with the coil. The coil could be the issue (gone bad) due to arc'ing etc contacts in the cap/rotor...

I suggest doing wires and plugs while doing the cap and rotor as well. Makes life easier.

you may need to reset the pcm or CTM as the security light being on indicates that the security system has been triggered and ignition kill is enabled, preventing you from starting your truck.

If you have your FOB keys, can you turn off the security system and try to start again?
