Default how to verify hitch class

Hi All,

I just bought a 2000 D R/T and it has what I believe to be the tow package. i.e. larger mirrors and looks like the plug was pre-wired in.

Does anyone know if the tow packages were class IV standard? I'll be towing a 4500 lb. travel trailer and want to make sure everything goes well. Especially since this is replacing a trailer that flipped on me while towing.

On the same note, the plug I have on the rv and the hitch female plug look identical but the one on the D is ever so slightly smaller that the male plug on the rv. Anyone ever run into this problem?

Thanks for any help ya'll can give me.

It's probably a class III hitch and will be fine for 4,500 lbs.

Is your plug a 6 pin or 7 pin? The RV plug will be a 7 pin.

If you have the R/T model, it is a class IV and is capable of towing 7500 lbs. You should be okay. Just make sure to check your tranny fluids and get a good scheduled maintenance job on it if you haven't done one in a while before pulling your trailer.

Unfortunately when I bought my R/T, the electrical OEM hitch socket was missing. I had U-Haul install a univseral electrical hitch socket.

Class III is good up to 7500 lbs so either way you are good to go. Your D will handle that load no problem.

Thanks everyone, these answers really put my mind at ease!

As for the plug socket, it is a 7 prong. I was able to swap it out for a new socket easily and all the lights are working!
