Default Just bought 99 Durango, Guess what, tranny problems

Just bought a 99 Durango, 135k, 5.2, 4x4. I don't mind the 5.2 as i had a 96 ram that made it to 220k before head gasket went. As with everyone else, tranny isn't shifting right. It's between 1st and 2nd.When it hits about 2500 rpm, you have to let off the gas, then if shifts, no other problems. Does this sound like the speed sensor?? I bought this truck real cheap because of the problem, they figured tranny was shot, but i don't think so, or at least hope so. There's no slipping or any other issues with it, yet.
Ihave a 03 Ram2500, 4x4, hemi, auto. We both set cruise at 60 with her following me, i was amazed it was holding at 20 mpg, where mine was at 15, haven't checked gears yet.

Sounds like you need to change the fluid/filter and do a "band adjustment"... If the speed sensor was bad you would have a code, take it to Autozone and have them pull the codes for you.

Welcome!

There is an ouput sensor on the transmission ( drivers side mid way down on the trans) that might be your problem. $60 bucks and the dealer. Also I would do what schusterjo said and have the trany serviced and bands adjusted. MAKE SURE THEY ONLY USE ATF+lll FLUID ONLY! You could use ATF+llll if you would like because it is Fully Synthetic.

Hello,

If you don't have a speed sensor code, then I would try adjusting the throttle cable to see if it makes a difference. If it does not make any difference, then I would get the governor pressure solenoid and governor pressure sensor checked. They are giving alot of shifting problems. You will have to take it to someone who can watch the values on a scanner. Hope this helps.

Call me a skeptic, but I never EVER buy it when someone's first post is bitching about transmissions or sludge.

1st... use some due diligence next time you buy your next used vehicle and you won't be in this presumed situation.

2nd... BS as to the "everyone else" line. Not needed, not necessary and not true. Reality is take care of your gear and it will take care of you. I know, I know... it wasn't your gear. See item #1

3rd... assuming you are for real and not a troll... the answer above for the governor pressure solenoid is correct. Get it replaced and have the transmission serviced at the same time. No Flushes! Drop the pan, adjust the bands, ATF+4 as the replacement fluid and use a genuine MOPAR replacement filter. All will be well from there.

Next time you have post #1 in a new place, new forum to you... how about a hello first instead of what we got this time around. Oh? Didn't need the forum before now. OIC. Not buying it, but IC.

Wow, what a nice welcome to the forum. I hope you give everyone the same welcome. A simple question and you go off, maybe I should check with you first before I post something since you are the self proclaimed Durango expert.

1st -I knew the truck had shifting problems, that's why I bought it so cheap. I knew I had to do some repairs to it. I've had Rams for years and haven't had too many problems, that's why I like Dodge.

2nd- Last time I checked I wasn't a troll, you on the other hand, well, don't think I have to say anything,

3rd- The others that posted, thanks for the replies.

Welcome to the forum. Don't mind him. I think someone replaced his Cheerio milk with something a little more yellow if you know what I mean.

Why not? Not everyone has time to just sit around posting on forums just chatting with everybody.

Do you think it's a conspiracy amongst Ford/Chevy loyalist to get on this Dodge board and post fake problems just to make the Dodge product look bad? (Dodge products don't really need any help doing this.)

If you had used some basic reading skills he said he bought it cheap BECAUSE it was like that. He already knew.

I took the "everyone else" to mean everyone else that has reported tranny problems which to me meant that he has at least researched this problem a little before posting.

How about just the advise without all of the drama?

Once again, not everyone cares about making friends online. Some just want solutions and that would mean only posting when there IS a problem.

RamBronco, regardless of my negativity, each point in my response has merit. We DO get trolls (can you tell I hate trolls?) Someone did **** in my cereal that day. Dodge forums are so tame. Stick you neck into a few others in the world and you will really get meaning of a not so warm welcome.

Nevertheless, most of the folks here are nice guys. Don't let ME affect your fun here. We do know a thing or two about Durangos in this section so if it's all honest, ask away. You will get a quality answer. FWIW, like I said, my money is on your failing governor pressure solenoid. It may last years like it is or only another day. You can't tell. Let us know what you find out.

Have a great day!!

Indy is right. There are too many trolls on here and I get royally pissed off when I roll onto them as well.……. People should say hi and not just rip into problems.

Indy’s has other issues on his sites as well and all is forgiven.

Now if this is a legitimate question then the answers are posted!

I don't see that this thread needs to continue so the rest of this thread is now locked.
