Question Help Please

I own a 1998 Dodge Durango....
A couple of days ago, I noticed while I was parking when turning at very slow speed, the wheels kind of spin...at every turn the same thing happens...I took it to my mechanic, we went for a ride, showed him the problem....

He just told me that there is nothing to worry about it, it is just the steering system tha is getting old ans somehow locks when turning!!!
and that there is nothing to do to fix the problem...

Could you please give me some advices regarding this problem.

I do not feel safe driving this car with this problem, this is my family car and it is very unsafe when turning...

Please help me

Thanks

98/99 Durango's do have older style recirculating ball steering box steering setups that wear out and fail

The 00+ have the updated Rack and Pinion setups that proved to be more reliable.

So... indeed, if you are having ANY binding while driving don't drive it and get it fixed. Also, call the service guy out for being a total idiot. DO NOT get your service there. Simply ridiculous. He should be fired. Driving the D in that condition could kill you, someone else or worse. Unbelievable.

If it is broke or incorrect, then they should have told you to fix it. They should not have simply shrugged it off as worn. You already know that... it's 11 years old for pete's sake.

Thank you very much for your honest and realistic reply...
I was surprise with the mechanic answer to the car problem, I am not a car literate but common sense told me that he was just wrong...

Could you please let me know what the solution for this will be, so that way I can go to another shop and have my problem fixed...any idea what they have to do o replace base on what I describe? how much wil it cost?

Could you please explain me what binding is while I drive?
Thanks

Costs will depend on what other items up front and suspension wise that need replaced. Anywhere from $500-$2500.

I recently replaced all the BJs, tie rods and ends and that alone was $890. Add to that if need be for an all new steering components. Will it also make sense to get into a new power steering pump worth keeping? How about the upper and intermediate steering shafts?

In the end, it could be a long list or simply the steering setup. My Durango is closing in on 200,000 miles yet looks and drives like it has 50,000. I keep up on things and don't skimp when need be. You may get away with just a fix on that specific part or you may need a lot.

All in all, no way would I go back to the other shop until I walked in with a repair receipt to talk with their management on why they put you at risk by claiming nothing could be done.

With a driving dangerous situation that you have, go get it looked at. Don't wait for a sight unseen freebie explanation from an online forum. The risks can be way to big for that.
