Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) Fixed!
2001 Durango 5.9 AWD ABS, 80,000 miles. I had both amber ABS and red Brake light warning lights come on and stay on (the dashboard) after starting and the ABS self test. These were the only symptoms. After following suggestions here, the odds were on the rear differential sensor so I replaced it. Still had the problem. I took it to the dealer for the next oil change and had them diagnose the ABS (for additional $35.00). Computer Anti-lock Brakes (CAB) Module was bad. These are very expensive. New over $450, junk yard was $275. After internet researching some more, I found two places that will rebuild them and guarantee the results. They were both in the $150-200 range, but Auto Truck Electronics (ATE) in Rogersville TN had an ebay rebuild buy for $60.00. The part easily removes by 4 torx screws and 3 electrical plugs. I sent it in on Monday and had it back in hand on Friday. Installed it and the warning lights cleared after a few start-up cycles. Back in business. Now...about that noisy front end and leaky thermostat...
I just have a very small pool of coolant around the area where the upper radiator hose connects to the top of the engine. Just noticed it while re-installing the ABS module and haven't looked at it real close but I assume the thermostat is there. I did replace that upper hose this past fall because of a leak in the plastic connection around the radiator cap.
I recently noticed front end noise which sounds similar to driving in a strong wind. Kind of a steady slight scraping noise which starts about 30 mph and up and continues on coast down to slower speeds. Maybe its been doing it for a while but I became aware of it within 100 miles after having the fluid changed at Jiffy Lube. Went back there, they confirmed it had full fluid and re-serviced it along with the Mopar additive. Later, I ran it on a friend's lift and the front differential is where the noise was coming from. Had estimates from $1500-$2700 to rebuild it. The transmission shop that just rebuilt my LeSabre transmission said the differentials usually go much longer. I suppose the AWD had something to do with it since it can't be driven in 2WD. Coincidently, both cars got major fluid changes (including the affected components) at Jiffy Lube within 100 miles of the problems...
