Default Transmission Problem

I have a 2001 Dodge Durango with about 110K miles on it. Recently the transmission has started acting up and the check engine light came on. We were driving across the interestate and it acted like it didnt want to shift and was running way to high on RPM's. I let off the gas and than came back on easy and it would shift. It stopped doing it and the check engine light went off after a few days. Now it started doing it again and the check engine light came on. Any suggestions?

What engine? 5.9 or a 4.7?
Did you check the transmission fluid?
when is the last time you changed the fluid?
Has it been serviced when it was supposed to? (transmission).
Did you pull the code when the light came on?

It has the 4.7
Transmission fluid is where it should be on the stick.
Fluid was changed about 40K miles ago.
Transmission was last serviced about 40K miles ago.
I dont know anything about the codes. How do I pull it?

Okay, you have a 4.7L that means your transmission is a 45RFE.
40K is a little to far for service.

To pull codes,

To check the code on the 2004 Dodge Durango you can also KEY from the on to start position 4 times (eg. Off to start, off to start, off to start, off) and the code should show up in the odometer reading. If you don't see something try turn the key again three times and then on the fourth turn leave it in the start position. It should show up.

Here is more

To check your engine codes:
Turn the key to ON (not start), OFF, ON, OFF, ON and leave it there. If you look in the odometer window the codes will flash any code(s) with a small delay between each result. Each code should be in a P#### format, and will say PDONE when completed - turn your key to OFF and remove. Use the OBD code list to determine what problem the computer detected.

I checked the codes and it doesn't show any it just shows PDONE. However, the check engine light isn't on right now so maybe that is why it won't show any fault codes? What type of service would my transmission need? I'm planning on changing the fluid and filter this week. Is there anything I should know before doing this myself?

Your transmission does not have band adjustment so all you really need is a fluid/filter change for regular maintenance.

Make sure you only use ATF+4 and you know how to properly check the fluid level with the truck running, see your owners manual.
