How Do I Replace Speed Sensors?
I have a 1999 Dodge Durango and recently my gauges have been going flaky, i.e. temp gauge (erroneously) pegs in the red zone for a few seconds at low speeds but returns to normal at higher speeds. The gas gauge will suddenly drop to "empty", then return to normal after shutting off the engine and restarting. I was told by a stranger (wish I'd got his phone number) that both speed sensors need to be replace and it's easy to do yourself. He had the exact same thing happen on the exact same model.
Here's my problem: I'm not a mechanic of any kind, so I'm at ground zero. However, I refuse to take it to the dealership for something I can supposedly do in 30 minutes for a fraction of the cost.
My request: Can someone provide a step by step procedure for replacing these sensors? It would make a good article for the DIY section of this site.
Thanks.

Have a 1999 Durango SLT. Had no speedo below 25. ABS and Brake light both on. Found help at this sight on what to look for under Durango ABS help. The Rear differental speed sensor you need a 13mm and 14mm wrenchs. the nut on top is 13mm and must remove it to get brake line and E-brake cable clamp loose. Make sure not to bent the brake line. Ounce clamp is out of way remove the stud bolt holding sensor with 14mm and remove metal shild then unplug sensor and pull it stright out. Put new sensor in, install shild, install stud bolt do not over tighten, put brake line/E-brake cable clamp back on and tighten nut. I did not have to change the trainy sensor but it looks fairly easy. Not sure of wrench size. Good luck. Parts at dealer were $38 for rear and I ask about trainy around $20. Hope this helps.
Thanks a bunch Great398. I'm going to give this a try. The problem with my guages is getting worse every day. If this works, I'll save $100's of dollars. I'll keep this forum posted of my results.
