Default Durango Air Conditioning Problem

I have a 2001 Durango. The A/C will work when I first start the Durango but after a few minutes it will stop blowing cold air at idle but blows cold when driving. Also notice a loud (rushing) sound from the trans area when this happens. If I turn off the Durango for a few minutes and start it again everthing works and sounds normal for a few minutes and the whole process starts again. If I leave the A/C off their is no loud (rushing) sound from the trans.

Hum? well I am no A/C guy but it may be possible that the system is low and is shutting down. Have u tried to buy a can of R134a and try to fill it? pretty simple, directions right on the can how to do it, pretty cheap under $20 for a can.

Sounds like you are low on freon.

+3 Add a can and see what happens. If it leaks back out, you know you have a bigger issue.

Spray out the condenser in the car wash with compressed water like iwa2002 is saying. Carefull with water on the engine electrical.

Yip, I would check for electric fan to make sure it is running when A/C is running, then check for air blockage from the front. Give it a good power washing if dirty. Lastly check to make sure your fan clutch is working properly.

DO NOT ADD any freon to your system yet. As you stated the system gets cold when you initially start the truck and only when you are driving. This does not sound like it is low on freon. If you add freon when the system is full, you can overload the system and bust a leak.

Get it diagnosed and serviced by a qualified tech before you ruin the system. Sounds like it needs to be pumped out and refilled to the proper level. They will add oil for the compressor and dye to find any leaks. Well worth the time.
