Default 01 4.7L Durango steering shot...

K, here's my story. Think I'm going in the right direction, but would like confirmation.....
The steering completely shut down on the Durango, Got it parked, steering wheel would turn maybe a quarter turn left or right, felt like it was binding up. That led me to think intermediate shaft u-joints seized. Got it home, picked it up off floor, no weight on wheels. By grabbing the tire I can rotate steering back and forth pretty smoothly. With engine running, still up in the air, now I can go full range with steering wheel, but VERY stiff. So I'm thinking the pump is shot. Any thoughts/clarification?

have one of your friends turn the steering wheel left and right while you look at the u joints on the i shaft you dont need to lift the truck off of the ground and when you hit bumps you hear a clickity clank??????

Sounds like a worm gear in the steering box.

I went ahead and yanked the pump this evening. Fluid was almost black, and a lot of it all over the bottom of the pump. If this doesn't do it, and it's the worm gear, how bad is that to do?

Subscribed.

I would like to hear all about steering fixes. We don't get a lot so I am all ears. Plus mine is a little sloppy, not binding, just sloppy at times. Other times, no probs.

Your knock is the intermediate and upper steering shafts. Just live with it. I have since 2004. I get a knock at about 10 & 2 especially when in a parking lot, etc.
