Default 4.7 Engine Install?

2002 Durango
I should get my 4.7 Longblock back from the machine shop this week. When I removed it I left the transmission in the durango, but the bolts where a bear to get too. Is it possible to bolt the transmission to the engine before installing and then stab them together? Would I need to remove the grill?

Any tips for the install?

Before pulling the engine I was getting the following error code:
P0601 PCM Internal Ctrller Failure

Should I replace the PCM with the new motor or can I use the current PCM? The engine would start and run.

Thanks,

Trent

Yes you can but you have to remove the radiator such.

Don't replace anything you are unsure about including the PCM. You don't want anymore issues then what you had. Install the motor then lets go from there.

The rebuilt engine is back in the Durango and it runs great.

Here are some tips for anyone doing their own install.

1. Leave the exhaust manifolds on the block for engine removal and install. Disconnect from the pipes.
2. Leave the starter hooked up, just unbolt.
3. The fan is a bear to remove from the water pump. Autozone nor Orielys has the correct loan a tool for removal. I had to use a piece of flat steel with grade 8 bolts inserted into two holes I drilled. 3" on center. It still took two men and a breaker bar on the crescent wrench to bust it loose.
4. Make sure all the windows are up before you discount all the electrical.
5. Leave the AC lines connected, just unbolt from engine and bungie cord up.
6. Use zip lock baggies to group bolts together and stick a label in the bag.
7. Take some pictures of the water pump bolts, so you can get them back in the correct spot.
8. Use a ratchet strap to hold the front of the tranny up while the engine is out.

Tips specific to Install.
1. Putting everything on the block except for the intake, dipstick, and fan.
2. For us it was easier to remove the driveshaft and slide the tranny back a few inches, then bolt the engine into the motor mounts and then slide the tranny foward. We tried to stab the engine with the tranny in place at first, but it was just not happening for us.
4. Set the spark plugs in, but don't install them. Leave them out so it is easier to turn the motor over to get it aligned with the torque converter.
5. Install the dipstick before the intake.
6. Buy enough oil, the engine holds 6 qts, not 5.
