I searched but couldn't any opinions on dealer '4x4 service'. I believe the interval for this is about every 24,000 km, and dealer wants $399.00 for front and back service. This is to change the oil, inspect the gears and replace the gasket. Mr. Lube charges $85.00 per differential to replace the oil.
Is the dealer 4x4 service a rip off? Is it ok just to have the oil drained and repalced at 1/2 the cost.?

Record Breaker
Done right, with a real preventative inspection of the gears/plates/joints/transmission/transfercase/ etc (drivetrain), the correct fluids/gasket/proceedures and knowledge/training of what they are looking at
Or
Lowest paid, walk on from the street, no knowledge/training, Diffs only, suck and fill with no cover removal, dont use additives- if the do use them are the wrong additives, charge you 2x the price for putting the wrong additives in, deny responsibility when something go's faulty etc etc.
Shall i continue?

Different dealerships do different things.. Call them up and ask them what they do for the 4x4 service, some do both diffs/transfercase/and flush the transmission.. If you want just the diff case done then tell them you just want a "Differentail service" and not "4x4 service". For a diff service your looking @ around $150, but if they are charging $399 for a diff service their smoking crack
You only need to change the oil. If the rear is limited slip then you need to put 5oz of friction modifier in if 9.25 axle was installed. There front is open gearing.
You should change the lubricant every 30,000 miles or when driving in deep water.
The gearing should be just fine, just replace the oil unless you think there is a problem. I hate anyone working on my truck so I do the changes and for Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic Limited Slip 75W-90 is 8.99 a quart and the friction modifier is 4.99 for 7oz bottle. I open the cover and drain the lubricant then clean and reseal the cover and add 5oz friction modifier and top off with 2.5 quarts of the 75W-90.
The one shop I used to take it to did a suck and replace lubricant for $20 front and $30 bucks rear but that was 2 years ago. I don't trust anyone with my truck but 2 people so good luck.
