Thanks for the input guys. Duranged: if my '99 was as well cared for as yours I'd be partial to it too. But mine is pretty rough. I don't plan on anything other than hauling kids, dogs, bikes. 99% on paved roads, remainder on gravel roads, no off-roading. I don't really need all the D's capabilities but I like the look and the way it drives. Does anybody know if the front passenger footwell is roomier in the '01+s? My wife told me today the footwell is kind of crowded and wants to get an Explorer instead.

You don't want an exploder!

Nothing much in differences of "foot room" but again I'd go with 2000 and up. You can also check into the R/T and she might like the style of that better!

LOL. The Explorer is SMALLER.

All Durangos from 1998-2003 are the same foot space. LOL.

I hate to be the devil's advocate
but if the future purchase of the durango is based on just DD with no towing/offroad/strenuos work/heavy winters i'd recomend the newest possible... Being that a family hauler/dd/trip vehicle purchase should be more influenced on MPG ratings... While you may want to sacrifice that for looks, if you are MPG concerned it may be a better idea to snoop around to what suits you (both) the best being Dodge or not...

Duranged the four wheel drive is something I want/need. The county announced they are only plowing between 7 and 3. So if I want to get around any other time this winter I'll probably need the 4x4. Mileage isn't of huge importance because my "commute" is less than 4 miles roundtrip, but it does add up on vacations. And this whole conversation has become moot because my wife was laid off. So i'll keep adding transmission fluid and coolant to my '99 and nurse it along for awhile. Thanks guys.
