Default Diagnosing electrical issue

I bought a 2000 5.9L Durango last week. It ran well and I found no major issues when I test drove it. After driving for 5 days I am having some electrical issues.

  • Occasionally when I turn the truck off and remove the key the radio (stock infinity) will stay on. Sometimes it turns off as it should.
  • Occasionally if I leave the headlights on the reminder will NOT buzz.
  • Occasionally when I turn the vehicle off and remove the key the headlight/key in reminder will buzz for no apparent reason. Headlights are off and key is removed.
  • On one occasion the battery died over night because something was drawing power.
  • The truck does have an aftermarket remote start installed. I have not been using it since the battery died, but the issues have continued.
Any idea where to start troubleshooting? I do have a code scanner and have the following two codes:
  1. P0500 - investigated and need to replace the rear VSS
  2. P0108 - MAP/Baro ckt high input
Thanks for any help!

Nice, first gen hemi Jk
You have the 5.9

Sounds like you may have gremlins in your column, but first sounds like youve had problems with your remote start. I'd recomend removing that, if not prof. installed with a life time warranty, and looking for an issue with the wiring. I'd say look into the column connector to see if you have and loose/frayed/burnt wires in the connection and make sure its properly seated.

If you dont think the map sensor is going bad, i'd recomend a good cleaning of your throttle body to see if it cures your i'lls. If not try to replace it and if to no avail, proceed to clean/replace your IAC

+1 on looking at the column first. Sounds like the electrical gremlins all point to there.

Thanks guys. I'll be tearing the column apart this weekend. Also need to switch out the MAP.

Got the differential VSS changed, speedo working now and shifting properly.
