Default About to touch up this rust spot

So I was hoping someone could give me an idea if what I'm about to do is right:

Since I'm doing just the little spot on the side, it's going to be body color. I have a grey durango, 98 if that helps any.

So I'm about to:

1) sand it down lightly using some low grit sand paper to get past the rust.
2) apply the rust converter
3) apply primer (not sure which color it should be, I guess if I can find something to color match that'd be good but if not then I'd go with white I guess? or black? idk
4) spray on the new coat on the certain spot.

this isn't the first time I've done this it's just that the time before I did it on a P.O.S. that wasn't worth anything so I didn't care if it didn't look right. I know it's not going to be seemless but I want it to not be obvious I touched it up.

you have the right idea, but keep in mind the prep work is EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and between the primer and top coats sand the area with a fine grit, wet sanding works if you please, and make the sanded area larger than the primed area so that you have room to blend the original paint with the touch up area

Ummm.... Shouldn't you sand down to bare metal and more around the rust spot first?

I'm guessing your "spot" is fairly large? More than a paint pen could handle? Is it surface rust or pitted?

If memory serves me correctly you can pull the paint codes off the door jam and order exact factory matches (paint, primer, hardeners, etc.).
