I all my years and Durango chat, there has never been an issue or question related to the exhaust running to close to the pan and heating the oil. Simply doesn't happen. I believe your friend may be one of the Dodge haters that we have to watch out for when they start trolling the boards.
With all that said, if you get a 2001 with the 5.9, it will be a little better than the 4.7l. Since 2000 was the first partial transition year for the 4.7, 2001 was still a shake out year. All in all, the 5.9L has a more mechanical approach to engine and trans while the 4.7l has a more electronic position to transmission and motor. Pick your poison... however my personal preference is the 5.9L combo. Older, more stable, better proven. Engine choices excluded, the Durango is extremely capable and reliable with just common routine maintenance.
