Thumbs down !!!!!! Transfer Case EXPLODED !!!!!!

So after the last time i used my 4x4 on my 99 Durango 5.2l w/ about 78K miles on it it started making this clicking sound from the front.

I thought maybe a wheel weight came loose and was tapping the brake caliper or something so i looked under the front of the durango and found nothing.

so i went for another little test drive around the block and tried the 4x4 again and when i put it in 4 wheel i could feel the tap in the 4x4 stick but after i put it back into 2 wheel the tap went away or so i thought.

Yesterday Saturday my wife, son, 3 dogs, and I were on I95 N heading from Jacksonville FL to Savannah GA area to visit family for Easter.

We made it into GA about 14 miles then all of a sudden i felt a slight vibration that did not feel right but before i could turn the cruise off of our 75mph roll there was a BOOM BANG and lots of SMOKE!!

I pulled over and had a look my transfer case EXPLODED into about 5 good size pieces.

Had the durango towed back to Jax and my mom and aunt came to pick us and the empty 16 ft dual axle trailer we were towing up.

so we just got back home to Jax and I searched and found that the cv axles can bind and cause the 4x4 not to disengage... i am wondering if that is what caused my transfer case to explode.

any ideas of why it exploded?

oh and im trying to make sure of the transfer case i have or had is a NV242 so that i can try to find another one.

I saw you posted in here.

Transfer Case
Axle bind causing T-case to stay engaged:

Sounds like a classic axle bind situation. Sorry to hear your problem but you came to the right place.

Take the top off and replace the chain while you have it out.
