Can a moderate home-mechanic adjust the bands accurately and safely or would it be better to have a dealer do it? In addition, can one change their filter and fluids at home as well? Just curious if there are any additional chrystler-only issues to be aware of. My first Ram 1500 here, feel I have a lot to learn.

You can do no problem but you need to have an inch lbs torque wrench and a manual. You simply drop the pan and make a mess all over, clean off the magnet in the pan, wipe out the pan, change out the filter, adjust the bands, then reinstall. The gasket should be rubber so you can reuse it. Just get a lil grease and wet the gasket with it (not too much) and reinstall using the correct torquing pattern. Then have about 6 qt of fluid ready and but 5 in and test for level the correct procedures.

If you are weary and don't think you can handle it then get the filter, fluid you would like to use (ATF+4), and take it to a shop and ask them to do the work with your fluids and parts and have them adjust it.
